How Chip and Joanna Gaines Do Holiday Decor: Inside the ‘Fixer Upper’ Duo’s Festive Home

December 14, 2017

 | Dec 8, 2017

Chip and Joanna Gaines' Waco, TX, home is always holiday-ready by the time Dec. 1 rolls around. The trees (yes, they usually have two) are trimmed and stockings are displayed, but most of their holiday decor suits their signature "modern farmhouse" aesthetic. Think ornaments, garlands, and festive accessories that complement a home filled with reclaimed wood accents, shiplap paneling, and a neutral color scheme. It's a style they've popularized through their home renovation projects on their HGTV show "Fixer Upper," their Magnolia Market retail shop, and their most recent home collection for Target, Hearth & Hand With Magnolia.

Their minimalist-rustic sensibility appeals to a vast audience, so if there's one place we knew we'd find good holiday decor ideas, it's inside the home of Chip and Jo!

We took a peek at the festive decorations inside the Gaines farmhouse from Christmases present and past. Find out how you, too, can deck the halls the Chip and Jo way.

Of the two Christmas trees her family puts up, this one is Joanna's favorite. It's filled with meaningful ornaments they've collected over the years, as well as red and green shiny balls to cultivate a traditional theme. Can you spot the ornament with Chip's head on it?

Jo sets the table in her dining room in front of their second tree, which is done up in a trendy rustic theme. Silver and pearlescent balls hang among white twinkling lights and a metallic garland. Of the Gaineses' two trees, this one gives off more of their signature "modern farmhouse" vibe.

The metal "Merry Christmas" sign and colorful miniature trees are a more modern take on holiday decorations than the kitschy garb we're used to seeing. This trendy Yuletide display pairs well with the antique piano that actually belonged to a family featured on "Fixer Upper." According to Joanna's Instagram post, the homeowner was ready to part with it, so she grabbed it for her home. Score!

While Jo certainly likes to sprinkle pops of metallic and colorful decorations throughout the home, she balances it out with objects plucked straight from the great outdoors. A no-frills pine wreath hangs over her daughters' homework table. And the basket of found pinecones (sans glitter or typical holiday bling) is something anyone could rustle up.

Spread the holiday cheer before you even walk inside the door! On the porch of the Magnolia House, a metal urn bursts with a display of pine branches, red berries, and pinecones. The plaid outdoor pillows transform the bench into a welcoming seating area, while the wreath and garland signify that the holiday season is here.

Looking for another way to dress up your banister? Take a tip from Jo and hang matching stockings leading upstairs. Pair them with a traditional pine branch garland, or ditch the garland all together. You have plenty of pine needles to clean up anyway. That is, unless you've moved on to a fake tree.
